Grow rooms – unique vertical gardens
at Aleja Bielany

Lush, ball-shaped gardens which one may enter and enjoy, sitting down on a bench and admiring dense vegetation...and there's more - you can create them yourself. Sounds mysterious? We present Growrooms - spheric plant vertical structures designed by a Danish studio Space10 in cooperation with IKEA, built by Aleja Bielany and available for each and every visitor of the centre from May to July.

The background

Shrinking food resources, decreasing cropland surfaces, mass system of food production and booming urbanisation – these challenges face modern civilization and stand behind the efforts of many scientists as well as designers seeking good solutions to fight them.

The search for sustainable solutions to modern problems related to wasting food and, at the same time, the necessity to continuously increase its supply have led the architects, Sine Lindholm and Madsa-Ulrika Husuma, towards urban agriculture – individual and neighbourhood farming in gardens, on squares or in homes.

This idea was the beginning of works on the unique vertical garden – Grow room, enabling planting many different plants on a relatively small surface. A furniture piece filled with vegetables, fruits or herbs from the bottom to the top, defined as “food-producing architecture” was to become an artistic exploration of an outstanding urban agriculture potential.

In order to popularize the idea of autonomous cultivations, the project of a grow room along with an assembly manual was uploaded for free downloading so that everyone can create their own vertical garden.

Hence, we truly encourage you to explore individual and neighbourhood cultivations!

Between May and July, in the premises of our centre, one could admire two grow rooms, built according to the manual and filled with vivid plants. Anyone could enter the grow rooms, appreciate the view of the plants and get inspired by them to create one’s own vegetable garden or herbarium!

If you're wondering how to care for plants properly, download our Flower Manual.

What is more, to maintain full circularity, the flowers from grow rooms were handed over to the local Aid Association Iskierka which runs Children and Youth Activity Centres.

We truly hope they will bring a pleasant, home-like atmosphere in these premises!
